The Market

Apparently distributors want action thrillers. Horrors are everywhere, so they’re not the guaranteed money-getters they once were. Documentaries and comedies don’t do well internationally, and China is HUGE, so Asian actors are a plus. The globalization of the film market has drastically shifted the genre balance. One problem: if you’re making an action film with a celebrity, it’s not going to be cheap. The barriers to entry into the market are still very, very high.
